The Truman Show was a movie that was based on someone’s life. From the day Truman (Jim Carrey) was born cameras were on him. He was going to be adopted into a film production company and placed in a world hidden from the real world. In his fake world there were 5,000 camera hidden so they could capture everything that happens to him. His life was a show being broadcasted to the world while he was unaware. The Truman Show was a hit and the number one watched show around the world. This movie was really entertaining to watch but I did think there were some flaws such as the ending, it was too unrealistic but overall it was a fantastic movie.
I enjoyed watching The Truman Show because I thought the use of camera angles, how well the actors were playing their parts and the special effects used was incredible. The camera angles used were great. I thought it was very clever to have a camera in the mirror in his bathroom, the neighbors’ dog collar and the dashboard of his car. Usually movies have a perfectly straight on shot of the main character but now this one. Having the cameras at all these crazy positions made the movie more interesting and gave a really intense feel of dramatic irony. Another aspect of this movie that made it great was how well the actors were acting. They did an outstanding job cutting off their real world while acting on the show. Everything they would say seemed so real and honest I really believed they were a real part of Truman’s world and it was not just acting. Also it was ridiculous how they would get set up and “in position” before Truman went to work every day and he never figured it out for 30 years. The special effects in this movie were very good as well. The technology was awesome how they could control when it rained, the thunder and lightning and when the sun would come up. It was really interesting how Christof and other crew members worked in the moon and from there they could switch to any camera and make any thing happened that they thought would make the show more interesting. An amazing use of special effects was when Truman was trying to sail to Fiji. The day started out cloudless with a bright blue sky and in an instant they increased the wind, made it pouring rain, changed the sky a dark blue/ black color, brought on thunder and lightning and of course increased the size of the waves to make it seem like a real storm was happening. The Truman Show was a very well put together movie but I was disappointed with how the movie ended.
If I could choose the ending to this movie I would have Truman and Silvia finally see each other again, have Truman actually be able to go out into the world and have him meet Chirstof the producer of the show and Truman’s life. Throughout the movie is was clear that Truman was still thinking about Silvia, a girl he met in high school before getting married to Meryl. Towards the ending of the movie when Truman ran into the cement wall it showed Silvia running out of her house to go meet up with Truman. To make the ending really good I would have showed them meeting up because Silvia was the one true person in his life that didn’t lie to him and genuinely liked him. Another thing I would have liked to see happen would be Truman actually going out into the real world for the first time in his whole life to see how he reacted. I think it would have been really interesting to get a few minute glimpse of how he viewed the world and how over whelming everything was for him. Meeting Christof I think would have been a very crucial part in the movie. At the end when christof was trying to convince Truman to stay in this fake world he seemed to care about him and he didn’t want to see him go. I feel that having them actually meet would have been really awkward and also another side of Truman would be seen. This movie would have been a lot better if there was a different ending to pull everything all together.
Although the overall movie was fantastic and entertaining to watch I thought that it was very unrealistic. While watching the movie I thought the advertisements used during “everyday life” were very cheesy and fake, the same thing happens every day and the fact that no one slips the secret that it’s a television show. The advertisement scenes were very obvious that it was fake. They were too set up and it seemed very obvious that the actors were talking to something else other then Truman. Another weird thing about this movie was the same thing happened every day. When Truman was going to work his neighbors were all doing the same thing every time he saw them. He also saw the same people going to work and every person was always in the same spot, at the same time, every day. The thing I thought was the most shocking was how no one seemed to slip that this was a show. I don’t think anyone could mentally handle lying to someone and pretending to be someone’s best friend for their whole like. It is not likely that after 30 years no one would accidentally talk about something from the outside world or make a reference to something Truman did not know about.
The Truman Show was a movie different from the ordinary reality show. The producers went above and beyond expectations and excelled in entertainment. This movie was not only interesting for the fact that a baby was famous from the moment he was born but the fact that the makers went out of their way to make a whole new world for this child. The world they had created was fabulous and is what made the movie great, but it was a little too unrealistic considering it went on for 30 years and the ending could have been better.
